Birmingham, AL – The 2019 TRUniverse LLC Award, presented by TRUniverse Athletics, is awarded to the nation’s top Defensive Lineman. Seven finalists, two of which come from the same team, have made the 2019 list.

The field for the 2019 TRUniverse LLC Award is as follows, Louisiana Lightning’s defensive tackle Carlos Coler, Gulf Coast Gators defensive end Eugene Robinson, Mississippi Dynasty’s defensive end Roy Williams and defensive tackle Louis Ellis, Tuskegee Ayrmen’s defensive end Patrick Campbell, Alabama Blackhawks defensive end Justin Robinson, and East Alabama Predators defensive end Ron Hooks.

Here’s a closer look at the finalist:
Carlos Coler, Louisiana Lightning, DT (6’4, 315, Hinds Community College): Coler is no stranger to the APDFL and the big stage. In his third season playing in the APDFL, 2019 was statistically his most productive season to date. Coler finished the regular season third in the league in total tackles with 69 with 20 tackles for a loss and 13.5 sacks. He anchored a Lightning defensive line that gave their opponents trouble week in and week out.

Eugene Robinson, Gulf Coast Gators, DE (6’4, 195, Arkansas University at Monticello): Undersized at the defensive end position, Robinson tends to go into each game with his opponents assuming they have the upper hand. His speed and agility however, tends to quickly take over as his opponent realizes they could be in for a long day. In 2019, Robinson doubled his sack total, from 10 to 20.5, making him one of the all time greats in that category. An impressive fate when looking at some of the dominant defensive tackles he faced over the course of the regular season. An edge speed rusher coming off of the edge, Robinson proved that with speed size can be underrated. He finished the season with 36 total tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 3 forced fumbles and a safety.

Roy Williams, Mississippi Dynasty, DE (6’1, 220, Holmes Community College): The leagues all time leading sack record holder (25) performed at a high level at times. With only seven statistical games recorded, his actual production does not equate to what is displayed on video. Williams utilizes both speed and agility coming off the edge to take advantage of his opponents lack of technique. One mistake and he can quickly be seen finishing the play.

Louis Ellis, Mississippi Dynasty, DT (6’3, 320, Shaw University): Ellis is the plug in the middle, it’s simply that simple. He has the ability to command a double team on each and every play and will always beat the one-on-one block when challenged. As he can be seen on film commanding the double team on just about each play, he is typically allowing for the second level to reach their target. He finished the 2019 season with 33 total tackles with 6 tackles for a loss and 8 sacks.

Patrick Campbell, Tuskegee Ayrmen, DE (6’4, 270, Sidney Lanier High): With only six statistical games recorded, Campbell once again proved that he has the ability to dominate his opponent. Campbell finished the 2019 season with just over 9 tackles a game and 14 tackles for a loss. Although his production may appear to have decreased from a season ago, his play on film continues to show an elite level player.

Justin Robinson, Alabama Blackhawks, DE (6’3, 245, Alabama State): The returning American Conference TRUniverse LLC Award recipient has found his way back in contention once again. Robinson could arguably be the most versatile athlete at this level. He has the ability to use that versatility week in and week out as he comes off the edge and makes his way into the opposing teams backfield. On the heels of one of the leagues most productive defensive performances ever, 2019 was still one to brag about. He anchored a defensive line core that stuffed their opponents running game on a weekly basis. He finished the 2019 regular season with 53 total tackles, 19 for a loss and 13 sacks. His awareness for the ball led him to 2 forced fumbles and 5 pass deflections.

Ronderius Hooks, East Alabama Predators, DE (6’2, 205, Tallassee High): Hooks spent time this season at both the defensive end and linebacker positions. As a smaller sized defensive end, he utilized speed and quick feet to obtain an advantage. The ability to play in pass coverage gave him an added advantage that the others didn’t possess. He finished the 2019 regular season with 51 total tackles and 6 tackles for a loss. In coverage, he added 4 interceptions, 3 pass deflections, and 1 interception for a touchdown.
